Task 5. Adding a Minor Entry
Learning objective
Given a Major Entry and the necessary information, you will learn to add a Minor Entry to the Major Entry.
Examples
- Irregularly inflected forms (men)
- Irregular phonological variants (knives; an)
- Irregular spellings (color, nite)
Preparation
To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database and go to the Major Entry child.
Tip: On the menu, click Go…Search, type c, and click Close.
Adding a Minor Entry
1. For the Entry Type, click
.
2. In Insert Minor Entry, for the Base Form, type children, and click Launch Editor. (Skip the Citation Form.)
Tip: If you click OK by mistake, you will
return to the Major Entry child. Go to
and
double-click children (or use Go…Search to locate it in the
Lexical Database).
3. In the Minor Entry children, for the Condition, type plural.
4. Close the Minor Entry Editor.
Result: Adds children to the
field.
5. Double-click children to open the Minor Entry Editor.
6. Close this window.
Adding a Minor Entry by converting a Major Entry to a Minor Entry
Preparation
You need to have an appropriate Major Entry before you can convert it to a Minor Entry.
Adding a Major Entry
1. On the menu, click Edit…Insert Major Entry (or
on the tool bar, click
).
2. For the Base Form, type lives. (Skip the Citation Form.)
3. For the Entry Type, click
.
4. In Major Entry Types, select stem and click OK.
5. In Insert Major Entry, click OK.
Result: Adds the Major Entry lives.
Converting the Major Entry to a Minor Entry
1. Double-click the Major Entry lives.
2. In the Major Entry Editor, choose Tools…Convert this Entry to Minor Entry.
3. In Select Major Entry for Minor Entry, select life and click OK.
4. Close the Minor Entry Editor.
5. On the menu, click File…Save Knowledge Base (or on the keyboard, press Ctrl+S).
