Task 6. Adding a Subentry
Learning objective
Given a Major Entry and the necessary information, you will learn to add a Subentry to the Major Entry.
Examples
- Derivatives (unimportant)
- Compounds (blueberry)
- Idioms (kicked the bucket)
- Phrase equivalents for key terms (angel of the Lord)
- Sayings (A stitch in time saves nine.)
- Phrasal verbs (give up)
Preparation
To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database to the Major Entry flag.
Tip: On the menu, click Edit…Insert Major Entry, type flag, and click OK.
Adding a Subentry by typing
1. In the Lexical Database Editor, click
.
2. In Insert Subentry, for the Base Form, type flagpole. (Skip the Citation Form.)
3. Click
.
Note: If you click OK by mistake, you will
return to the Major Entry flag. To edit the flagpole Subentry,
go to
and
double-click flagpole (or use Go…Search to locate it in the
Lexical Database).
4. In the Subentry Editor, go to Entry Type and click
.
5. In Chooser: Subentry Types, double-click compound (or select it and click OK).
6. Close the Subentry Editor window.
Result: Adds flagpole to the
field.
7. Double-click flagpole.
Result: Opens the Subentry flagpole window.
8. Close the Subentry Editor.
Adding a Subentry by converting a Major Entry to a Subentry
Preparation
You need to have to have an appropriate Major Entry before you can convert it to a Subentry.
Tip: In Workshop Explorer, go to Linguistics…Lexicon…Data and double-click English Lexical Database.
Adding an appropriate Major Entry
1. On the menu, click Edit…Insert Major Entry (or
on the tool bar, click
).
2. In Insert Major Entry, for the Base Form, type flagship. (Skip the Citation Form.)
3. For the Entry Type, click
.
4. In Chooser: Major Entry Types, select stem and click OK.
5. In Insert Major Entry, click OK.
Result: Adds the new Major Entry flagship.
Converting a Major Entry to a Subentry
1. Double-click the Major Entry flagship.
2. In the Major Entry Editor, choose Tools…Convert this Entry to Subentry.
3. In Select Major Entry for Subentry, select flag and click OK.
4. Close the Subentry Editor.
Result: Adds flag to "Subentryof."
5. To open the Major Entry, double-click flag.
