Task 7. Adding a Sense
Learning objective
Given a Lexical Database and linguistic data, you will learn to provide Sense information for the Entry and to use the context-sensitive help in authority lists and assign Thesaurus categories to a Sense.
Examples
The tests to decide when two readings of a word are one sense or two Senses are
- yes/no
- zeugma, and
- crossed readings.
Preparation
To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database and a Lexical Database Editor and go to the Major Entry flag.
Adding Sense information for the Major Entry
1. Go to Part of Speech and click
.
2. In Chooser: Part of Speech, select noun and double-click
.
3. Double-click common noun (or select it and click OK).
Result: Opens the Major Entry flag and adds common noun as the Part of Speech.
Alternative to Steps 1–3: Click beside Part of Speech and type c to add common noun.
4. Click Gloss: <ENG> and type flag.
5. Click Definition: <ENG> and type A piece of cloth, usually rectangular, of distinctive color and design, used as a symbol, a standard, a signal, or an emblem.
6. Click
,
select Vernacular: <EGA>,
and type The flag was flown on Independence Day.
Tip: (Skip Free Trans: English because English is the vernacular in this exercise.)
7. On the menu, click File…Save Knowledge Base.
