Task 8. Working with Thesaurus links

Learning objective

You will learn to link Senses to Thesaurus (semantic) categories, and then view the semantically related words in the Lexical Database.

Preparation

To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database and a Lexical Database Editor and go to the Major Entry flag.

Adding Thesaurus categories to a Sense manually

1. Click .

Caution: The Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament by Louw and Nida has many entries and will take a while to load the first time!

2. In Link Sense to Thesaurus Categories, do the following:

1. Click and read Working With Thesaurus Categories.

2. On the toolbar, click and read about the Louw and Nida Lexicon.

3. Close LinguaLinks Help and return to the Link Sense to Thesaurus Categories window.

3. Select Include Peripheral Categories.

4. For more categories, click .

Tip: If appears shaded, the window is already open. Press F9 to bring that window forward.

5.In Search Keywords, type emblem, select it in the list, and click Close.

Tip: The keywords list does not often include inflected forms. To choose from any thesaurus category, select Thesaurus Outline. You may need to expand or contract certain categories and scroll through the list.

6.Select 1.4.6.2 Adornments and click .

Tip: You can select several consecutive rows of categories by holding Shift while you click.

7.Click OK.

Result: Accepts your changes, returns to the Major Entry flag, and beside , adds 1.4.6.2 Adornments.

8.Double-click 1.4.6.2 Adornments to open the Lexical Database Category Viewer and then close the window.

Adding Thesaurus categories to a Sense automatically

Learning objective

You will learn to first gloss and index entries in your Lexical Database. The program uses the gloss and index to find a Thesaurus link, so carefully choose your glosses and indexes.

Caution: The scope of the automatic linking depends on which editor you use. The Lexical Database Editor will index the entire database.

Linking to the entire database

1. In the Lexical Database Editor, go to the menu and click Tools…Auto-Set Thesaurus Links.

2.In LinguaLinks Message, click Continue.

Result: Auto-sets the entire database.

Linking only one glossed Entry

1. In the Lexical Database, double-click the Entry title and go to the Entry Editor.

Tip: In a Major Entry Editor or Sense Editor, it only affects the open unit.

2.On the menu, click Tools…Auto-Set Thesaurus Links.

Result: Displays the links beside  in the Sense boxes.

Deleting Thesaurus links

1.In a Sense box of a lexical entry, beside , click an incorrect link.

2.On the keyboard, press Delete.
