Task 13. Setting preferences for the Lexical Database
Learning objective
You will learn to customize the LinguaLinks Lexical Database tool for the most commonly used Preferences.
Preparation
Open the Lexical Database Editor, go to the menu, and click Options…Preferences to open the Set up the "Standard" Preference Set window.
Tip: To get more information, right-click any term for Context-Sensitive Help.
Setting Global Preferences
1. For Preferences, select Global (applies to all workshop objects), click the Fonts tab, and choose the desired Size and Body text.
2. Click General and choose the the desired Language Markers (Foreground Color, Background Color, and whether to select or clear Show Multilingual Language Markers).
3. Click Languages and for Available Encodings, select French,
and then click
.
Result: Moves French to Selected Encodings.
4. If two or more languages are in Selected Encodings, click
or
to
set the desired order.
5. If you do not want a language in the Selected Encodings
list to appear with your data, select it and click
.
Result: Moves the language to Available Encodings.
Setting up the Lexical Database
1. For Preferences, select English Lexical Database Setup.
2. Edit the Dictionary Title.
3. Choose the desired Vernacular Encoding.
4. Move the desired Available Encodings to Citation Form Encodings (for lexical forms with affixes, or for non-IPA orthographies).
5. Select the desired Encoding for Pronunciations.
Setting up the General Lexical Database
1. For Preferences, go to Lexical Database, double-click

and select General.
2. Decide whether you want to select Include Alphabetical Section Heads in the dictionary Print layout.
3. For Sort By, select Base Form or Citation Form.
Setting up the View options
1. For Preferences, go to Lexical Database, double-click
,
and select Data Entry–Normal.
2. Click Components and for "Below Are View Components For a," choose Sense.
3. In Unused Components, click
.
Result: Moves Annotations, Cross Refs, Pictures, and Sense Type to the View Components in Order pane.
4. Select a field and click
or
to
move it to the desired location.
5. For "Below Are View Components For a," choose Major Entry.
6. In Unused Components, click
.
Result: Moves Cross Refs to the View Components in Order pane.
7. Select Cross Refs and click
.
Result: Moves Cross Refs above the Senses field.
8. For Preferences…Lexical Database (Proof–Normal, Publication–Normal, or Rich Text Format–Normal view only), click the View Options tab, select the desired Print Body of Subentries location, and click OK.
