Task 16. Editing an Authority list

Learning objective

You will learn to open any Authority list in LinguaLinks, display the objects linked to any item in the list, and add a Subitem to any Item in the list.

Preparation

To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database to a Major Entry (Data Entry View) in the Lexical Database Editor or the Major Entry Editor.

Accessing the editing functions for the Authority list

1. In the Data Entry view of any Major Entry and in a Sense box, beside the Part of Speech field, click .

2. In Chooser: Parts of Speech, click .

Result: Opens the Editor: Parts of Speech window.

Displaying objects linked to an Item in the Authority list

1. For the Parts of Speech, select adjective, and click .

Result: Opens the Back Reference List window and shows all the Senses linked to the Parts of Speech adjective that would be affected if you change or delete the Reference.

3. Close the Back Reference List window.

Adding an item to the Parts of Speech Authority list

Choosing an existing Part of Speech, if appropriate

1. In Editor: Parts of Speech, select marker, and double-click (or click at the top of the window).

Result: Expands all items in the list to the second level.

2. Select marker in the authority list and at the top beside item, click .

3. Select subitem and click .

Result: Adds a subitem to the marker category, and opens the Item Editor: Parts of Speech window.

Filling in details for the new Entry

1. Click the Display Name <ENG> insertion point and type gender marker.

Result: Adds this name to the Authority list and the Sense box when this category is selected for an Entry.

2. Click the Abbreviation box.

Result: Automatically inserts gender marker in the Abbreviation and List Order boxes.

3. Use the Back Space key to delete unwanted or incorrect characters.

Tip: You cannot remove characters with the Delete key. You can select characters and type over them or use the Spacebar. This abbreviation appears in the LexPOS line of Interlinear Text when you select this category for an Entry.

4. Click .

Result: Adds gender marker to the Parts of Speech Authority list.

5. To add another subitem to the same section of the Authority list, click without returning to the Authority list view.

6. To exit from the Edit mode, click .

Choosing the Part of Speech

1. To close the Chooser: Parts of Speech window, click OK.

Result: Assigns the selected Part of Speech to the Sense in the Major Entry from which you accessed the Authority list. If you did not select an Item in the Authority list, nothing will happen when you click OK.

2. Click Cancel to close the Authority list and return to the Major Entry.

Adding an item to the Parts of Speech authority list from the Tools menu

1. If you have a Major Entry Editor open, go to the menu and click Tools…Lexical Database Editor.

2. To see all available lists, go to the menu and click Tools…Authority Lists.

3. Double-click Parts of Speech, select subitem, scroll to verb, select reflexive, and click .

4. For Display Name choose reflexive verb, for Abbreviation choose refl v, then click , and click Close.

Opening the Tools … Authority Lists

1. Double-click Domain Types, inspect the list, and click Close.

2. Double-click FRAME and OCM Codes, inspect the list, and click Close.

3. Double-click Usage Types, inspect the list, and click Close.

4. Double-click Sense Types, inspect the list, and click Close.

5. Double-click Major Entry Types, inspect the list, and click Close.

6. Double-click Subentry Types, inspect the list, and click Close.

7. Double-click Note Types, inspect the list, and click Close.

8. Double-click Lexical Relations, inspect the list, and click Close.

9. Double-click Thesaurus, inspect the list, and click Close.

10. Double-click Louw & Nida Thesaurus, inspect the list, and click Close.
