Task 33. Navigating in large texts
Learning objective
You will learn four ways to move through text:
- Traditional cursor movements
- Scrollbar
- Toolbar arrow keys (and the Go menu)
- Outline jumping
Preparation
Move your cursor by pressing the keyboard arrow keys or by clicking the mouse at desired screen locations. In Workshop Explorer, go to Grammar…Data and open Life begins each morning!
Using the scrollbar
1. Scroll through a text with the vertical scroll bar.
Tip: Large texts may repaint very slowly.
2. To move one line at a time, click the
and
scroll
arrows.
3. To jump one screen at a time, click between a scroll arrow
and the
(scroll
box).
4. To jump longer distances, click
and
drag it the desired distance.
Tip: The distance you want to move can be difficult to determine.
Using the toolbar and Go
1. In the text window, go to the toolbar and click the
or
scroll
arrows.
Tip: Four Object levels are in Outline view, decreasing to smaller sizes of text Objects: Whole-text, Section, Paragraph, or Segment. You can only delete Objects at the highest Whole-text level. Text is divided into different Object sizes, so these toolbar arrows are not quite the same as the linear Lexical Database.
2. Compare the toolbar scroll arrows with the menu Go commands:
- The toolbar
(or
the menu Go…First) moves to the first item of the current Object
level. From the beginning, it goes to the previous Object at the next higher
level. - The toolbar
(or
the menu Go…Previous) moves to the previous item of the current
Object level. From the beginning, it goes to the previous item of the next
higher level. - The toolbar
(or
the menu Go…Next or the keyboard Ctrl+T) moves to the next item
of the current Object level. From the end, it goes down to the next item
of the next lower level. - The toolbar
(or
the menu Go…Last) moves to the last item of the current Object level.
From the end, it goes up to the last item of the next higher level. - The menu Go…Up (or the keyboard Ctrl+U) moves up the Object level hierarchy.
- The menu Go…Down (or the keyboard Ctrl+D) moves down the Object level hierarchy.
- The menu Go…Back (or the keyboard Ctrl+B) moves back through each previous Object.
Using Outline to move through large texts
Learning objective
You will learn to use the Text outline feature that displays various Object levels in outline form in a separate window. You will learn to tile the Text window vertically and resize it to view both the Outline and Text windows. You will also click an Outline icon to display that level Object in the Text window.
1. On the menu, click Tools…Outline.
2.; Resize the Outline and Text windows so they are side by side.
3. In Outline, double-click
to
expand the outline as desired.
Tip: Double-click
to
collapse the outline.
4. In Outline, click
once
at the desired Object level.
Result: Shows only the Object level view in the Text window.
Tip: If you want to select a different portion
in the Outline window, press
.
5. To edit, select some text in the Text window.
6. To scroll to other segments in Outline, click somewhere in that window (or in the Text window, use the toolbar arrows or the Go menu).
Arranging or tiling windows
1. Minimize all but the desired windows.
2. On the menu, click Window…Tile Vertically (or Horizontally).
Tip: Rearranging windows helps you see more screens at the same time and allows you to work more efficiently. Tiling vertically helps with tall, narrow data lists. Tiling horizontally helps with wide data lists that span the entire width.
3. Resize each window as desired.
Result: Displays the desired windows side by side.
Finding a character string in a text
1. In the Text window, go to the menu and click Tools…Outline.
2. In Outline, go to the menu and click Edit…Find.
Tip: This is a fairly quick way to jump to a specific Wordform in a text. This only works for text that is prepared for analysis.
3. In Find Text, type a text Object (e.g., or because it has no spaces) and click Find.
Result: Lists all the Objects of various levels with that string of characters in the left pane.
4. In Found Texts, click the desired text.
Result: Lists all the Wordforms linked to that segment in the right pane.
5. In Context, double-click the desired Wordform.
Result: Opens the Wordform Inventory Editor at that Wordform.
6. To view the Interlinear Text segment of your Wordform, double-click a text segment in the middle or lower pane.
7. Close all windows except Workshop Explorer.
