Task 36. Working with Example sentences

Learning objective

You will learn to use examples from the text corpus as illustrative sentences in the Lexical Database—with or without modification. You will also learn to add new examples to the Lexical Database if no suitable text examples exist.

Preparation

Open the English Lexical Database.

Showing attested examples in sense

1. In the Lexical Database Editor, go to the menu and click Options…Preferences.

2. In Preferences, go to Lexical Database, and select Data Entry–Normal.

3. In Components, go to "Below are View Components for a," and select Sense.

4. In Unused Components, select Attested Examples and click .

Results: Moves it to View Components In Order.

5. Select Attested Examples and click until it is below Examples and click OK.

Adding an Example sentence without attested Examples in text

1. Open the Major Entry flock.

2. Go to a Sense and click .

Result: Opens an empty box because the Sense is not linked to any text.

3. For Vernacular, type The flock of geese is on it's way south.

4. For Free Trans, type the desired free translation.

Adding an Example sentence with attested Examples in Unmodified text

1. Open the Major Entry –ed.

2. Go to a Sense box and click .

3. In Add Example, select the sentence and click .

Tip: You cannot edit it in the Lexical Database, but it is linked to the text. Any changes you make there will show here.

Adding an Example sentence with attested Examples in With Modifications text

1. Open the Major Entry new.

2. Go to a Sense and click .

3. In Add Example, select the desired sentence.

4. Click .

Result: Does not change the text but adds the example to the Example Sentences database so you can parse it there.

5. For Vernacular, type There are new vistas, new aims, and new attempts to be reached.

6. For Free Trans, type the desisred free translation.

Adding an Example sentence with attested Examples in Add New Example text

1. Open the Major Entry -es.

2. Go to a Sense and click .

3. In Add Example, click .

Result: Adds the example to the Example Sentences database so you can parse it there.

4. For Vernacular, type The boxes were used to transport the cargo.

5. For Free Trans, type the desired free translation.

Deleting an Example sentence from a Sense

Caution: If you delete an unavailable text Example, it breaks the text links to Analysis Editor Sense combinations.

1. Below , click the number outside an Example box.

2. On the keyboard, press Delete.

Moving an Example sentence

Tip: You can also move or copy Examples from one Sense to another Sense or even to Senses of different entries.

1. Click the number outside an Example box.

2. On the menu, click either Edit…Cut (or on the keyboard, press Ctrl+X) or Edit…Copy (or on the keyboard, press Ctrl+C).

3.On the menu, click Object…All Insertion Points.

4.In the Lexical Database Editor, click .

5. In Add Example, click .

6. Click the number beside the new Example and on the menu, click Edit…Paste Link (or on the keyboard, press Ctrl+L).

7. On the menu, click File…Save Knowledge Base (or on the keyboard, press Ctrl+S).
