Task 3. Using Data Entry Quick Help with the Lexical Database

Learning objective

You will learn to use Quick Help to find what various fields in the Data Entry view represent. You will read a general description of some key fields in the Lexical Database to help you relate LinguaLinks fields to their existing data fields (when importing data). You will also learn to use Data Entry Quick Help as a resource when adding information to various fields.

Preparation

To prepare for this task, start LinguaLinks Workshops and open the English Lexical Database.

Using the Lexical Database Editor

1. On the menu, click Help…Data Entry Quick Help.

Result: Opens an external interactive multimedia program. The Major Entry bear1 is an example to show all the possible fields.

2. Click and read information about Navigation Buttons.

3. Click each field to read additional information on page 1.

Tip: You do not need to read or fully comprehend each description, but look at Base Form, Citation Form, Entry Type, Subentries, Minor Entries, Annotations, Senses, LexSense, Part of Speech, and Sense Type.

4. Click to advance to page 2.

Tip: Look at Gloss, Definition, Examples, Thesaurus, Lex. Relatns, Indices, OCM Codes, and Tags.
