Task 12. Comparing the Data Entry and Proof views of lexical entries

Learning objective

Given a Lexical Database in LinguaLinks, you will learn to simultaneously view a Major Entry and its Subentry in the Data Entry view in separate editors, and the combination of both in the Proof view of the Lexical Database. You will learn to identify the correlations between the Data Entry and Proof views.

Preparation

Open the English Lexical Database Editor and make it the active window in LinguaLinks. On the menu, use Window to select it (or use Workshop Explorer to open it).

Viewing and comparing a Major Entry and its Subentry

1. On the menu, click Go…Search and type bear.

Result: Highlights bear in the list.

2. Select bear1 and click Close (or double-click the item).

Result: Opens the Major Entry bear1 as an Entry in the Lexical Database Editor.

Displaying bear out in the Subentry Editor

1. In the Major Entry bear1, go to and double-click bear out.

Result: Opens the Subentry Editor to Subentry bear out.

Displaying bear in the Major Entry Editor

Result: Cascades all the open LinguaLinks windows.

2. Minimize all the open windows except the

·Lexical Database Editor with bear1 (Proof view)

·Major Entry Editor with bear1 (Data Entry view), and

·Subentry Editor with bear out (Data Entry view).

3. On the menu, click Window…Tile Horizontally (or click Window…Tile Vertically).

Tip: The sequence of the windows is not important. Horizontal displays the windows one above another. Vertical displays the windows side by side.

Comparing the Data Entry views with the Proof view

1. Make this comparison:

·Identify the Base Form bear1 in the Data Entry view of the Major Entry Editor.

·Identify and compare the Base Form bear1 in the Proof view of the Lexical Database Editor.

2. Make this comparison:

·Identify the Base Form bear out in the Data Entry view of the Subentry Editor.

·Identify and compare the Base Form bear out in the Proof view of the Lexical Database Editor (scroll as needed).

Result: The Subentry bear out appears after the Major Entry bear1 in the Proof view.

3. In the two Data Entry views, find the Sense information for bear1 and bear out and notice how they appear in the Proof view of the Lexical Database Editor.

4. To view the Sense information for a Subentry in the Major Entry, change the Preferences as follows:

1. Open the Lexical Database Editor.

2. On the menu, click Options…Preferences.
