Task 30. Working with the Morphology Explorer
Learning objective
The Morphology Explorer will help you discover morphemes in your prepared texts with two approaches:
·A Form-Based approach searches your data for Common Morphs, Text Base Lines, Wordforms, or Lexical Entries (so you can investigate their meaning).
·A Meaning-Based approach searches your data for Common Glosses, Free or Literal Translations (so you can identify corresponding morphemes).
Searching for data
Loading the Morphology Explorer
1. Open an Interlinear Text or Wordform Inventory Editor.
2. On the menu, click Tools…Morphology Explorer.
Result: Opens the Morphology Explorer on English, American Wordform Inventory window.
Defining a search
1. In Find, specify which Interlinear Text line the tool should search from.
Tip: Select free translations, wordforms, wordform glosses, or lexical entries. Finding Text base lines shows a whole line of wordforms and is useful for searching for phrases in texts.
2. In the box below Find, type the string or partial string of text the tool should search for.
Tip: Unfortunately, when finding Text base lines, typing does not always show the IPA correctly, but the tool does search correctly. Close the window and try again to resolve the problem.
3. Make adjustments in the other boxes as desired to change the scope of the search.
Tip: Showing wordform & preliminary glosses also shows the Wordform Part of Speech.
4. Click Search.
Result: Results appear in the upper pane.
Working with the results
1. To see the context of its occurrence (concordance) in the lower pane, single-click a resulting word or morph.
2. To edit, double-click a resulting word or morph.
Result: Opens an associated editor.
3. Close the window.
