Task 32. Working with texts

Learning objective

You will learn to create new Interlinear Text, change the Title, work with Authorship statements, make Section headings, enter text data, work with Segments, Paragraphs, and Sections, and work with Wordforms.

Preparation

Close all open windows and make Workshop Explorer your active window (or on the menu, click File…Workshop Explorer).

Creating new Interlinear Text

1. In Workshop Explorer, go to Workshops and select Grammar.

2. Go to Blueprints for Creating Data and double-click Interlinear Text.

Result: Opens the Choose One window if more than one encoding is assigned to the Practical Orthography of the language.

3. Select English, American and click .

Result: Adds New Text below Data in the right pane.

Changing the Title

1. Double-click New Text.

Result: Opens the New Text window.

2. Select the New Text title and type This is a new text.

3. Close the window and press Ctrl+Y.

Result: Changes New Text to This is a new text.

Inserting an Authorship statement

1. Double-click This is a new text and on the menu, click Set View…Minimum Insertion Points.

2.In This is a New Text, double-click the <Interlinear Text: Authors> insertion point.

3. In the Authorship Statement Editor, type your last name, a comma, and your first name until your name appears.

Tip: If your name is not in the list, click Add Person, select New Person, type your first name in the Preceding Part box and your last name in the Family Name box, and click Insert.

4. Beside Name, click .

5. If you are not the author, click .

6. In Chooser: Roles, select the desired role and click OK.

7. In the Authorship Statement Editor, click OK.

Adding another Authorship statement

1. Select an author.

2. On the toolbar, click one time.

Result: Changes to "Selected Object is an Authorship Statement in the authors of an Interlinear Text" at the status bar on the bottom of the LinguaLinks Workshops window.

3. On the menu, click File…Insert (or on the toolbar, click ).

4. In the Authorship Statement Editor, add another author.

5. Beside Name, click .

6.If it is not an author, click .

7. In Chooser: Roles, select the desired role and click OK.

8. In the Authorship Statement Editor, click OK.

Deleting or Editing the Authorship statement

1. Click the <Authorship Statement: Affiliation> insertion point and click one time.

Tip: Rather than edit this field, it is easier to delete an old Authorship statement and insert a new one.

2. Press Delete.

Tip: If the insertion point disappears, on the menu, click View…All Insertion Points.

Making a Section heading

1. Beside , click the <Interlinear Section: Heading> insertion point.

Caution: Do not double-click the <Interlinear Section: Sections> insertion point or it will create subsections, which are difficult to use.

2. Type the desired text for the Section heading.

Tip: To change the font, select the text, on the menu click Edit…Change Language, choose the desired encoding (for non-IPA, select ANSI; for IPA, select English-IPA), and click OK.

Entering text data

1. Click the <Segment: Contents> insertion point.

Tip: When you write clitics as separate words rather than affixes, you do not have as many Wordforms and not as much analysis. Break long sentences into segments no longer than 5 or 6 words.

2. Type a phrase or sentence (or copy text from an external document and paste it into the insertion point <Segment: Contents >).

Tip: If you select ¶ in external text, LinguaLinks inserts the required number of Segements for each paragraph.

Adding one blank Segment to a Paragraph

1. Click ¶ beside a Segment.

2. On the menu, click Edit…Insert (or on the toolbar, click ).

3. In Object to Insert, click OK

Result: Opens another <Segment: Contents> insertion point.

4. Click the <Segmented Paragraph: Contents> insertion point, if available.

Adding multiple blank Segments to a Paragraph

1. Highlight some blank Segments at the desired insertion points and on the middle of the toolbar, click and select Segment.

2. On the keyboard, press Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V.

Tip: You can copy entire segments at a time. When you copy and paste Segments that contain text, it will also copy the text in those segments.

Inserting a Paragraph

1. Click the ¶ beside a Segment at the desired point of insertion.

2. On the middle of the toolbar, click and select Segmented Paragraph.

3. On the toolbar, click or until you see "Selected Object is a Segmented Paragraph in the paragraphs of an Interlinear Section" on the status bar at the bottom of the window.

4. On the menu, click Edit…Insert (or on the toolbar, click ).

5. Double-click the <Segmented Paragraph: Contents> insertion point.

6. In Please Choose, select Segment and click OK.

Result: Opens a blank Segment.

Inserting a Section

1. Click ¶ beside a Segment at the desired point of insertion.

2. On the middle of the toolbar, click and select Interlinear Section.

3. On the toolbar, click or until you see "Selected Object is an Interlinear Section in the sections of an Interlinear Text" on the status bar at the bottom of the window.

4. On the menu, click Edit…Insert (or on the toolbar, click ).

Tip: The Default place of insertion is after the selection.

Caution: Do not double-click this <Interlinear Section: Sections> insertion point or it will create Subsections, which are difficult to use.

5. Double-click the <Interlinear Section: Paragraphs> insertion point.

Tip: You can set the place of insertion to before or replace..

Moving a Segment

1. Click inside the Segment you want to move.

2. On the toolbar, click until you see "Selected Object is a Segment in the contents of a Segmented Paragraph" on the status bar at the bottom of the window.

3. On the menu, click Edit…Mark To Move (or on the keyboard, press Ctrl+K).

4. Click inside another item (object) before or after the desired destination.

5. On the middle of the toolbar, click and select before or after.

Tip: Clicking menu View…All Insertion Points may help to show object boundaries.

6. On the toolbar, click or until you see "Selected Object is a Segment in the contents of a Segmented Paragraph " on the status bar at the bottom of the window.

7. On the menu, click Edit…Move (or on the keyboard, click Ctrl+M).

Splitting a Segment into two

1. Place the cursor where you want to split the segment.

Tip: You can only split a text object before or after a selected object that is a Wordform or larger, or before or after an insertion point.

2. Click (or on the menu, click Edit…Split).

3. In Choose One, select segment and click Select.

Splitting a Paragraph or Section in two

1. Click ¶ beside a Segment where you want to make a split.

Tip: You can only split a text object before or after a selected object that is Wordform or larger, or before or after an insertion point. You may need to expand the selection to highlight one level below the desired object.

2. Click (or on the menu, click Edit…Split).

3. In Choose One, select before or after and click Split.

Splitting a word into two or more words

1. Click where you want to split a word.

Tip: This works best for words not yet prepared for analysis.

2. Insert a space.

Tip: To split one Wordform into two or more Wordforms, you can insert spaces in the text to make new words. That leaves unattested Wordforms in the inventory so you need to reanalyze the Wordforms.

Joining two or more selections

1. Highlight adjacent selections you want to join.

Tip: This works only with objects that are Segment size or larger, not with Wordforms.

2. On the toolbar, click (or on the menu, click Edit…Join).

Joining two or more words

1. Click where you want to join the words.

Tip: This only works for words not yet prepared for analysis. It does not work for joining Wordforms.

2. Delete the space.

Joining two or more Wordforms

1. Click where you want to join the wordforms.

Tip: This works for joining Wordforms, but will leave unattested Wordforms in the Wordform Inventory.

2. Type in the other Wordform that you want to join to that Wordform.

3. Delete the other separated Wordform by clicking until you select the Wordform and press Delete.

Tip: You will need to reanalyze the Wordform and delete unattested Wordforms from the Wordform Inventory Editor.

Inserting a new Wordform into a prepared text line

1. Click the desired point of insertion.

Tip: On the menu, select Object…All Insertion Points.

2. Type the Wordform with a space before and/or after.

3. Reset the analysis links by clicking the word.
