The code spa is classified in ISO 639 as an individual language code.

We have mapped this code to Spanish [SPN]. MARC also uses this in reference to the Aragonese language [AXX] (they mention the "Cheso" dialect), as well as to Asturian (Bable) [AUB]. Aragonese and Asturian are distinct languages and are not in the same immediate branch of the genetic language family as Spanish. Both are official languages in Spain, and have language associations promoting their use. Therefore, they may be candidates for their own codes in ISO 639-2. Furthermore, most existing implementations of this code would use it in reference to varieties of Spanish proper. We therefore suggest that this code should be used for Spanish only.
