Population 34,800 in Russia (1989 census), about 95% speak it as mother tongue. Population total all countries 44,900.
Region Karachay-Cherkess Republic. Also spoken in Germany, Turkey (Asia), USA.

Dialects TAPANTA, ASHKARAUA, BEZSHAGH.
Classification North Caucasian, Northwest, Abkhaz-Abazin.
Comments Some dialects are partially intelligible with Abkhaz. 69.5% are fluent in Russian. More vigorous in Russia than Turkey. 'Abaza' is their name for themselves.
