Population 300 in Peru (1998 SIL). Population total both countries 520.
Region Sepahua, Curiuja, Upper Ucayali, Inuya, Mapuya, and Purus rivers. Also spoken in Brazil.
Alternate names   AMAWAKA, AMAGUACO, AMEUHAQUE, IPITINERI, SAYACO
Classification Panoan, South-Central, Amahuaca.
Comments Closest to Cashinahua. 10% can speak Spanish fairly well. Some speak only Spanish. Most speak some Spanish. Children not learning Amahuaca (1999). The group is disintegrating and losing its tribal identity. Dictionary. Grammar. SOV. Literacy rate in first language: 1% to 5%. Literacy rate in second language: 5% to 15%. Hunters, fishermen, agriculturalists. Bible portions 1963-1997.
