Population 261,000 (1997 IMA). 
Region Assam, Darrang District; Arunachal Pradesh, Subansiri District.
Alternate names   DAFLA, DAPHLA, NISSI, NISHI, NYISING, NYISHI, BANGNI, LEL
Dialects AKA LEL, TAGIN, NISHANG.
Classification Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, North Assam, Tani.
Comments Related to Apatani, Adi, Yano, possibly Lepcha. Tagin may be a separate language. Apatani may be a dialect of Nisi. Nishi and Tagin are both Scheduled Tribes in India. 'Nishi' has been used as a cover term for the western Tani languages. Investigation needed: intelligibility with Tagin, Apatani. Literacy rate in second language: 10% Assamese. Agriculturalists: shifting cultivation. Traditional religion. NT in press (1998).
