Some Pakistani dialects are closer to standard Gujarati than others. Pakistani Gujarati is probably a subdialect of Patani (Voegelin and Voegelin 1977). The Memoni ethnic group in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and other parts of Pakistan are reported to speak a variety closer to Gujarati, while those in India are reported to speak a variety of Kachchi. All Parsi (5,000), many Ismaili Muslims, and many Hindu sweepers (10,000 to 100,000) speak Gujarati. Many Parsi and Ismaili Muslims are literate in Gujarati. There seems to be a shift to Urdu among many Gujarati-speaking sweepers. Newspapers, radio programs. Bible 1823-1998. See main entry under India. |
