Population 835,100 in Myanmar (1983 estimate). Population total both countries 900,000 to 935,000.
Region Eastern delta region from east of Rangoon as far as Ye and Thailand; south Martaban, adjacent area. Also spoken in Thailand.
Alternate names   TALAING, MUN, PEGUAN
Dialects MATABAN-MOULMEIN (CENTRAL MON, MON TE), PEGU (NORTHERN MON, MON TANG), YE (SOUTHERN MON, MON NYA).
Classification Austro-Asiatic, Mon-Khmer, Monic.
Comments The Mon can read Burmese and are generally bilingual in Burmese. Many young people use only Burmese. Remnants of a nation that once spread over southern Myanmar and western Thailand. SVO. Ancient script, Indic-based derived from Pali. Bible 1928.
