Population 6,000 (1991 Bender and Rehg), 50% of the population, 7,000 including second language users (1991 UBS). 
Region Nauru Island, Pleasant Island, isolated atoll west of Kiribati.
Classification Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Central-Eastern, Eastern Malayo-Polynesian, Oceanic, Central-Eastern Oceanic, Remote Oceanic, Micronesian, Nauruan.
Comments Almost all people are bilingual in English. Children apparently not learning Nauru. Active use. Used as a second language by the Kiribati, Tuvalu, Kosraean, Marshallese. School attendance is required from age 6 to 17. National language. Fishermen, phosphate mining. Christian. Bible 1918.
