Population 800 speakers out of 2,500 population (1977 SIL). 673 Fox speakers, including 2 monolinguals (1990 census). 
Region Mesquakie at Tama, Iowa; Sac and Fox at Sac and Fox Reservation on eastern Kansas-Nebraska border and central Oklahoma.

Dialects FOX, SAC, MESQUAKIE.
Classification Algic, Algonquian, Central.
Comments Kansas and Oklahoma groups are closely related to Kikapoo of Oklahoma and Mexico. Bilingualism in English. In Iowa it is spoken by parents and the elderly (1998). Outside Iowa most or all speakers are middle-aged or older. Vigorous in Iowa. Literacy rate in first language: Below 1%. Literacy rate in second language: 75% to 100%. Bible portions 1986-1996.
