Population 1,984 speakers including 20 monolinguals (1990 census), out of 5,000 population (1977 SIL), including 3 Chemehuevi (1990 census). 
Region Ute in southwestern Colorado and southeastern and northeastern Utah; Southern Paiute in southwestern Utah, northern Arizona, and southern Nevada; Chemehuevi on lower Colorado River, California.
Dialects SOUTHERN PAIUTE, UTE, CHEMEHUEVI.
Classification Uto-Aztecan, Northern Uto-Aztecan, Numic, Southern.
Comments Most adults speak the language but most younger ones do not. Literacy rate in first language: Below 1%. Literacy rate in second language: 75% to 100%.
