Task 4. Adding a Major Entry
Learning objective
Given a lexical database and linguistic data, you will learn to add a Major Entry to the Lexical Database and provide basic entry information. You will also learn to use Context-Sensitive Help in Authority lists.

- Morpheme (house; lovely; -s)
- Loan word (tisa (Tok Pisin))
- Proper name (London)
- Abbreviation (Mr.)
- Letter of the alphabet (A)
- Acronym (MP (Member of Parliament))
Preparation
To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database and also open a Lexical Database Editor or a Major Entry Editor window.
Adding a new Entry
1. On the menu, click Edit…Insert Major Entry (or
on the tool bar, click
).
2. In Insert Major Entry, for the Base Form, type flag. (Skip the Citation Form.)
Tip: When you do not enter the Citation Form, the Base Form is automatically entered as the Citation Form.
3. For the Entry Type, click
.
4. In Chooser: Major Entry Types, select root and click OK.
5. In Insert Major Entry, click OK.
Result: Adds a new Major Entry flag.
Alternative to Steps 3–5: For the Entry Type, type r to insert the root item.
