Task 11. Working with entries

Learning objective

Given a Lexical Database in LinguaLinks, you will learn to create, convert, merge, duplicate, and delete entries.

Preparation

To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database, open a Major Entry Editor, and go to the Major Entry flag.

Duplicating entries

1. Click Tools…Duplicate This Major Entry.

Result: Gives two entries for flag.

Editing entries as necessary

1. Delete Sense 1 from flag1.

Tip: Click the number to the left of the Sense. On the keyboard, press Delete. In the Confirm Deletion window, click Delete.

2. Delete Sense 2 from flag2.

Merging entries

Caution: Make sure you merge entries with no text links into entries with text links. If the Entry you merge has text links, the lexical lines will not show. You will either need to reassign the links to the LexEntry Sense or reanalyze the words before merging.

Reanalyzing entries with text links before merging

1. Click Tools…Wordform Inventory Editor: Assign Analyses.

Result: Opens a Worform Inventory Editor: Assign Analyses window listing all wordforms containing the entry.

2. Alter the analysis of each word to use the target entry (i.e., the entry you want to retain).

3.When finished, close the Wordform Inventory Editor window.

Merging entries

1. Go to the Entry you want to merge (delete; e.g., flag2).

2. On the menu, click Tools…Merge Entry.

3. In the Search Window, double-click the target entry (retain; e.g., flag1).

Result: Adds senses of the initial Entry to the target Entry.

Deleting entries

1. Choose one of the following entries:

a. For a Major Entry in the Lexical Database Editor (or Major Entry Editor), select the Entry title.

b. For a Minor Entry in the Lexical Database Editor (or Minor Entry Editor), select the Entry title.

c. For a Subentry in the Subentry Editor, select the Entry title.

2. On the menu, click Edit…Delete (or on the keyboard, press Delete).

3. In Confirm Deletion, click Delete.

4. To undo a deletion, click Edit…Undo.

Tip: On the keyboard, you can press Ctrl+Y to refresh the Lexical Database.

Converting a Major Entry to a Subentry

1. Open the Lexical Database Editor and go to the Major Entry adolescent.

Tip: On the menu, click Go…Search, type ado, and click Close.

2. On the menu, click Tools…Convert This Entry to Subentry.

Tip: If this option does not appear, double-click Major Entry: Adolescent to open the Major Entry Editor.

3. In Select Major Entry for Subentry, select adult and click OK.

4. In the Subentry Editor, go to Entry Type, click , select a Subentry Type (e.g., compound, idiom, etc.), and click OK.

Converting a Subentry to a Major Entry

1. Go to the Subentry Editor adolescent, click Tools…Convert This Subentry to Major Entry.

2. Go to Entry Type and click , select a Major Entry Type, and click OK.

Converting a Major Entry to a Minor Entry

1. Go to the Major Entry Editor adolescent, and on the menu, click Tools…Convert This Entry to Minor Entry.

2. In Select Major Entry for Minor Entry, select adult and click OK.

3. In Minor Entry Editor, go to Condition and type diminutive, then close the window.

Converting a Minor Entry to a Major Entry

1. Go to the Minor Entry Editor adolescent, and on the menu, click Tools…Convert This Minor Entry to Major Entry.

2. Go to Entry Type and click , select a Major Entry Type, and click OK.

Converting a Subentry to a Minor Entry

1. Go to the Subentry Editor adolescent, and on the menu, click Tools…Convert This Subentry to Minor Entry.

Converting a Minor Entry to a Subentry

1. Go to the Minor Entry Editor adolescent, and on the menu, click Tools…Convert This Minor Entry to Subentry.
