Task 21. Creating a Tree Lexical Relations set

Learning objective

You will learn to rename and add Lexical Relations sets and to link entries. The set names display alphabetically in the middle pane when you select their type.

Preparation

In the Lexical Database Editor, add the Major Entry: Body. Fill in appropriate information and for the Definition, type the whole physical structure that makes up a person or animal.

Renaming an existing Lexical Relations set

1. Select the Sense: Body 1 box and click .

2. In Currently Defined Relations, go to TREE RELATIONS and double-click .

3. Select whole-part.

4. In Sets For Selected Relation, select Parts of the body and click OK.

5. In the Whole-Part Set Editor, select Name: Parts of the body, change it to Parts of the head, click OK, and close the window.

Adding a new Lexical Relations set

1. Repeat Steps 1–3 for Renaming an existing Lexical Relations set.

2. Click .

3. In Whole-Part Set Editor, click the Name box and type Parts of the body for the new set.

Linking an existing Lexical Entry

1. Select <LexSenseOrSimpleSet>.

2. In the left pane, click body 1 to select it.

3. At the top of the right pane, click .

Linking existing entries by choosing a Thesaurus Category

1. In the right pane, double-click beside body 1.

Result: Creates another insertion point for the new set member.

2. Select <LexSenseOrSimpleSet>.

3. Click in the middle box in the left pane.

4. Click  at the top of the left pane.

5. Select Thesaurus category, 2.3.2 parts of the body and click OK.

Result: Adds all senses in the Lexical Database that are linked to this Thesaurus category.

Linking items from the Thesaurus category

1. Select head 1 and at the top of the right pane, click .

Result: Links head 1 to the set.

2. Select head 1 and at the top of the right pane, click .

Result: Creates another insertion point for the new set member.

3. Select <LexSenseOrSimpleSet>.

4. In the left pane, select foot 1.

5. At the top of the right pane, click .

6. Repeat Steps 1–2.

Adding a new entry

1. In the middle of the top toolbar beside , click .

2. In Insert Major Entry, type the information for the new trunk, entry, and click OK.

3. Select trunk 1.

4. In the lower pane, for Part of Speech, select common noun and for the Definition, type the thick main part of the body.

5. Close the Whole-Part Set Editor and press Ctrl+Y.

Result: In the Lexical Database Editor, adds trunk, foot beside as the pt.
