Task 22. Adding a Segment and entering a new line of text
Learning objective
You will learn to enter a line of text with its Free Translation to an existing text fragments document.
Preparation
Change the gloss languages preference to list French first,
by using Options…Preferences. Select Global and click the Languages
tab. Move French to the Selected Encodings pane, click 
to
move it above English, and click OK.
Creating new Interlinear Text
1. Open Workshop Explorer (or on the menu, click File…Workshop Explorer).
2. For Projects, select EGA-English, American.
3. Go to Workshops…Linguistics and click Grammar.
4. Go to Blueprints For Creating Data in the right pane and double-click Interlinear Text.
Result: Opens a Choose One dialog box if more than one encoding is assigned to the Practical Orthography of the language.
5. Select English, American and click Select.
Result: Adds New Text below Data in the right pane.
Deleting Interlinear Text
1. Open Workshop Explorer (or on the menu, click File…Workshop Explorer).
2. Go to Workshops…Linguistics and click Grammar.
3. Go to Data and select New Text.
4. On the menu, click Edit…Delete.
5. In Confirm Deletion, click Delete.
Opening interlinear text
1. Open Workshop Explorer (or on the menu, click File…Workshop Explorer).
2. For Projects, select EGA-English, American.
3. Go to Workshops…Linguistics and click Grammar.
Result: Lists available texts for Data already created for Projects: English, American.
4. Double-click English sentence fragments.

Entering text in the Interlinear Text object
1. In English sentence fragments, scroll to the end of the document and select ¶1s3.
2. On the menu, click Edit…Insert and in Object to Insert, click OK.
Result: Inserts a new segment.

3. Beside ¶1s4, click <Segment: contents> and type The toddlers ran quickly to their parents.
4. Click 
.
Result: Opens an insertion point.
5. Click the <FRN> insertion point and type Les petits enfants courraient rapidement a leurs parent (French translation of the English sentence).
6. On the menu, click File…Save Knowledge Base.
