Task 31. Working with the Parts of Speech Viewer

Learning objective

You will learn to use the Lexical Parts of Speech Viewer that displays all analyzed textual occurrences (including analyzed Example Sentences from your lexicon) of a certain Part of Speech (e.g., you can see all of your Wordforms or Lexical Senses marked noun). You will also learn to check your analysis, and to find morphemes and grammatical structure in your textual data.

Preparation

Analyze the Part of Speech of several Wordforms in Interlinear Text.

Opening the Viewer and choose a Part of Speech

Opening the Viewer from an Interlinear Text

1. From inside an Interlinear Text, double-click a Part of Speech in either the WfPOS line (Word Level only), or the LexPOS line (Morpheme Level only) of text.

Opening the Viewer from the Wordform Inventory Editor

1. In the Wordform Inventory Editor, click Tools…Concordance by Part of Speech.

Choose the desired Part of Speech

1. In the Lexical Parts of Speech Viewer, go to the desired part of speech, and select adjective.

2 Select either Word Level or Morpheme Level.

Result: Shows all text occurrences of Wordforms that correspond to that Part of Speech if you selected Word Level (or double-clicked a WfPOS in the text). If you selected Morpheme Level (or double-clicked a LexPOS in the text), opens the corresponding senses and their definitions in the middle pane and all text occurrences of those senses in the lower pane.

3. Compare all data of a given Part of Speech and look for

·errors in analysis, and

·patterns in morphology.

4. Double-click the data to edit it.

5. To select a different Part of Speech and view all corresponding Wordforms or Senses, repeat Steps 1–2.

Jumping to Sense Editor to edit Glosses or Parts of Speech

1. Open the Lexical Parts of Speech Viewer and click Morpheme Level.

2. Double-click blue in the middle pane.

Result: Opens the Sense Editor.

Jumping to text from the Lexical Parts of Speech Viewer

1. In the lower pane, double-click the Concordance line.

Result: Opens the Interlinear Text of that segment so you can edit.
