Task 49. Working with the Dictionary Print layout

Learning objective

You will learn to print a dictionary from your Lexical Database, to select which fields and entries you want to print, and how to display certain things.

Preparation

Open the Lexical Database Editor and close all other windows.

Choosing fields

1. On the menu, click Options…Preferences.

2. For Preferences, beside Lexical Database, double-click .

3. Click Publication–Normal.

4. Click the Components tab, and make any desired changes.

Choosing the Subenty location

1. For Preferences, click Lexical Database…Publication–Normal.

2. Click the View Options tab.

3. For Print Body of Subentries, select either "At End of Its Major Entry" or "In Separate Entries."

Choosing General preferences

1. For Preferences, click Lexical Database…General.

2. For General, select or clear Include Alphabetical Section Heads.

Choosing the desired headword

1. For Preferences, click Lexical Database…General.

2. For "Sort by," select either Base Form or Citation Form.

Editing the Dictionary title

Tip: You can usually edit the title directly from the Dictionary Print Layout view. This permanently changes the Lexical Database Setup title, but you can change it.

1. For Preferences, click English Lexical Database Setup.

2. For Dictionary Title, type the desired text and click OK.

Printing the entire Dictionary

1. In the Lexical Database, on the menu, click Tools…Dictionary Print Layout.

Tip: You can edit or delete many fields while in Layout view.

2. Size the window about 7 inches wide.

Caution: If you have a 14 inch or larger monitor, do not maximize the window! It will print exactly what you see on the screen. If the window is wider than the printer, text along the edge will be cut off.

3. On the menu, click File…Print.

4. In the Print window, click , and close the Dictionary Print Layout window.

Tip: Do not worry if the Print Range says 65534 pages. It will only print your Dictionary or the filtered subset.

Printing a Filtered Dictionary

1. In the Lexical Database, on the menu, click Tools…Dictionary Print Layout.

2. On the menu, click Go…Filter.

3. In Filters, select Missing POS and click OK.

Result: Displays only records that match the filter and shows the filter status in red on the bottom status bar.

4. Size the window about 7 inches wide.

Caution: If you have a 14 inch or larger monitor, do not maximize the window! It will print exactly what you see on the screen. If the window is wider than the printer, text along the edge will be cut off.

5. On the menu, click File…Print.

Tip: Do not worry if the Print Range says 65534 pages. It will only print your Dictionary or the filtered subset.

6. In the Print window, click , and close the Dictionary Print Layout window.

Changing the Preferences

Tip: It is good to match the Rich Text Format settings with the Publication settings.

1. In the Lexical Database, on the menu, click Options…Preferences.

2. For Preferences, beside Lexical Database, double-click .

3. Select Rich Text Format–Normal.

4. Click the Components tab, make any necessary changes, and click OK.

Displaying the Dictionary Print Layout

1. In the Lexical Database, on the menu, click Tools…Dictionary Print Layout.

Exporting a file in Rich Text Format

1. On the menu, click File…Export.

2. In Choose One, select Rich Text Format (RTF) and click .

3. Select the desired directory, type English.rtf, and click .

Result: Gives a blue progress bar at the bottom of the window while saving the file.

Opening the Rich Text Format File

1. Open Windows Explorer and find English.rtf in the Cellar subdirectory.

2. Double-click the file to open it in Microsoft Word.

Formatting multiple columns

1. Press Ctrl+A.

2. On the menu, click Format…Columns.

3. Select Two and click OK.

4. Select the title and click Format…Columns.

5. Select One and click OK.

6. Edit the file as desired and on the menu, click File…Print.

7. Close Microsoft Word.
