Hiri Motu in the constitution of PNG

Regarding:
Language Status
ISO 639-3:
hmo

I agree that the importance of Hiri Motu in PNG is declining, but there is a reference to it (with Tok Pisin and English) in the constitution as a language in which universal literacy is sought [Preamble 2(11)] and as a requirement for citizenship by nationalisation (Pisin or Hiri Motu, or a vernacular of the Country) [67(2)(c) and 68(2)(h)]. Therefore Hiri Motu and the other two languages have something like a statutory status.

Editorial Action

We will add the status of "Recognized Language" for Hiri Motu [hmo] in Papua New Guinea for the 19th edition of the Ethnologue.
