Task 15. Entering appropriate Sense information
Learning objective
You will learn to enter all appropriate Sense information.
Preparation
To prepare for this task, open the English Lexical Database. Go to a Lexical Database Editor (or Major Entry Editor) and open the Major Entry flag. Set the Preferences for the Data Entry View for a Sense for the Lexical Database to include Annotations, Cross Refs, Pictures, Sense Type, Usage Types, Domain Types, and Media Files, and click OK.
Adding a Sense Type
1. Go to Sense Type and click
.
2. In Chooser: Sense Types, select primary and click
.
3. In Context-Sensitive Help, click What is a primary sense?
Result: Opens the LinguaLinks Help window with glossary information regarding a primary Sense.
4. Close the Help window.
Tip: Select an item and click Help (or right-click) for helpful linguistic information about each item in the Chooser.
5. In Chooser: Sense Types, double-click primary (or select it and click OK).
Alternative step: Click the Sense Type box and type p.
Result: Adds primary as the Sense Type.
Adding a Usage Type

Adding a Cross-reference to an Entry
1. To add a Cross-reference, click

the desired Sense or Entry.
2. In the Select Entry or Sense window, choose country and

Adding a Cross-reference to a Sense
1. To add a Cross-reference, click

the desired Sense or Entry.
Result: Opens the window.
2. Select Entry or Sense, in the left pane, select corporal.
3. In the right pane, select the desired Sense and click
.
Alternative step: In the right pane, double-click the Sense you want to link to.
Result: Adds the linked Entry to

both entries and includes the Sense number.
Deleting a Cross-reference
1. Beside

Adding a Picture

Adding a Media File

Adding an Annotation

3. In Chooser: Note Types, select general and click OK.
4. In the Annotation Editor, click the Simple Note: <ENG> insertion point.

Grouping multiple Senses in an Entry
1. Decide which Senses you want to group together.
Tip: You may add Sense groups later when enough Senses within an Entry justify grouping. You can create groups based on (usually) one of the following:
- Part of speech
- Semantic considerations
- Sense type (primary, secondary, figurative)
Changing the Preferences
1. Click Option…Preferences.
2. For Preferences, select Data Entry–Normal.
3. For "Below are view components for a," select Sense Group.
4. For View Components in Order, select Heading and click OK.
5. On the menu, click Object…All Insertion Points.
Adding a Sense Group
1. Below
,
double-click the <LexSenseOrLexSenseGroup> insertion point.
2. In Choose One, double-click Sense Group.
Result: Adds an empty Sense Group.
3. In the Heading box, type Verb.
Moving existing Senses into the new Sense Group
1. Click the number at the left to select the Intransitive verb sense.
2. On the menu, click Edit…Mark to Move.
3. Scroll to the Sense Group box and click <LexSenseOrLexSenseGroup>.
4. On the menu, click Edit…Move.
5. On the menu, click File…Save Knowledge Base.
