Task 25. Analyzing a Wordform

Learning objective

Given an Interlinear Text object that has been prepared for analysis, you will learn to launch the Word Analysis Editor for a specified Wordform and analyze the morphemes in the Analysis Editor.

Preparation

With the Interlinear Text English sentence fragments open, use Tools…Wordform Inventory Editor to launch the Wordform Inventory Editor.

Beginning analysis of the Wordform toddlers

1. In the Enter Text box, type toddlers.

Result: Indicates in the Analysis pane that "there are no analyses for the selected wordform."

2. Double-click toddlers.

Result: Opens the Analysis Editor From Wordform Inventory Editor: Assign Analyses.

3. Go to WfPOS (Wordform Part of Speech) and click .

4. In Chooser: Parts of Speech, go to noun and click , select nominal, and click OK.

5. Go to PreWfGlos, click the <FRN> insertion point, and type petits enfants.

Tip: This is the meaning of the Wordform in the segment you just entered. You do not need to enter a preliminary gloss since you will complete the word analysis and provide a precise gloss in this exercise. The preliminary gloss is a "first guess" as an assignment point for occurrences until analysis of this word is complete. It is also useful when searching in the Morphology Explorer.

6. In the Insert Spaces For Morph Breaks box, place the cursor immediately before the s, insert a space, and click OK.

Alternative to Steps 5 and 6: Click the white box and type nom (French for noun).

Result: Begins the Morph Analysis of this Wordform and the window changes so you can enter information for each part of the word.

Analyzing the parts of the Wordform toddlers

Preparation

In the word Analysis Editor window, you need to work from the top down.

1. Go to toddler and beside Type, click .

2. In Choose One, double-click Root.

Result: Defines the type of Morph for toddler.

3. Go to toddler and beside LexEntry, click .

Result: Opens the linking point with the English Lexical Database and in Choose One, displays toddler as the first Sense.

4. Double-click toddler.

Tip: If the Baseform toddler were not already in the Lexical Database, an Insert Major Entry box would appear to allow you to create this Entry in the Lexical Database.

Result: Automatically fills in the Sense information for toddler and -s from the first sense of each Entry in the Lexical Database.

5. In Sense Combination 1.1 WfGlosses, click the <FRN> insertion point and type petits enfants.

Tip: This is the gloss for the Wordform, toddler in the context you analyzed. It is also the translation equivalent in French for this Wordform that will appear in the Interlinear Text. Any Wordform can have multiple glosses imposed upon it by the context in which it is used and by the way you would say it correctly in French (or whatever glossing language is used). You can add other word glosses by double-clicking the <gl> insertion point.

6. Close the Analysis Editor and return to the Wordform Inventory Editor.
