Task 28. Using the Wordform Analysis shortcut

Learning objective

You will learn to bypass the Wordform Inventory Editor. The advantage is that it saves time because it does not open and close so many windows. The disadvantage is that you might not see the Concordance of a Wordform to help make your analytical decisions, and you can assign only one Occurrence at a time.

Preparation

Open the Interlinear Text English sentence fragments, and go to segment ¶1s4.

Breaking a Wordform into parts (morphs)

Opening the Analysis Editor Window

1. With Interlinear Text open and prepared for analysis, click the Wordform ran in the text.

2. Press the Ctrl key and double-click the Wordform (or on the menu, click Tools…Analysis Editor).

Tip: If unavailable, it is already open or you failed to click a Wordform first. Click the taskbar to restore the Analysis Editor From English Sentence Fragments if it is already open.

3. On the toolbar, clear the Outline box.

Editing the Analysis

4. For the WfPOS, select verbe.

Caution: Do not change the Wordform in the Analysis Editor top line as that will not change the text, but only the Wordform Inventory and Morph links.

5. For the PreWfGlos, click the <FRN> insertion point and type courir.

Tip: This PreWfGlos allows any new Sense Combinations for the WfGloss. On the keyboard, you can press the Tab key to jump to PreWfGlos.

6. In the Insert Spaces for Morph Breaks box, replace ran with run ed and click OK.

4. If the Insert Major Entry window opens, edit the Base Form and other information as needed, and click OK.

Tip: If you know the Entry is in the Lexical Database but you spelled it differently in the text, you can use the Morphology Explorer to search for the Lexical Database gloss.

5. If the Choose One window appears, select or create an Entry.

6. Beside and below Sense Combination, enter or edit information as appropriate.

Tip: LexPOS allows you to select the Part Of Speech for Senses in the Lexical Database.

Auto-Assigning Wordform occurrences

Tip: Occasionally a word will only have one Sense (like some names). The tool can automatically link to any text example using that word. Auto-assign is not available for words with more than one Sense. Words are assigned automatically only when text is prepared for analysis.

Caution: Do not use this feature very often! If you use Auto-assign, but later discover another Sense, you need to review all the Auto-assigned text examples to ensure they are correctly assigned.

1. In the Analysis Editor, after setting the Analyses, check Auto-assign All Text Occurrences to This Analysis at the bottom of the Sense Combination section.

Tip: Auto-assigning only occurs when text is Prepared for Analysis.
