Task 39. Working with the Category Viewer

Learning objective

You will learn that the Lexical Database Category Viewer allows you to see all entries or senses of the same type. You will study them to see common morphemes or meanings, to compare the gloss and definitions for consistency, and to see similarities and differences.

Preparation

You need to make appropriate links in the Lexical Database for each desired Sense. The categories available are

Opening the Category Viewer

1. Open the Lexical Database.

2. On the menu, click Tools…Lexical Database Category Viewer.

Selecting the Domain Types category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Domain Types.

2. In the left pane, click politics.

3. On the toolbar, select Senses.

Result: Displays all the Senses linked to politics.

4. In the right pane, double-click flag.

Result: Opens the Sense Editor.

5. Close the Sense Editor.

Selecting the Major Entry Types category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Major Entry Types.

2. In the left pane, click suffix.

3. On the toolbar, select Entries.

Result: Displays all the Entries linked to suffix.

4. In the right pane, double click -ed.

5. Close the Major Entry Editor.

Selecting the Note Types category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Note Types.

2. In the left pane, select grammar.

3. On the toolbar, select Senses.

Result: Displays all the Senses linked to grammar.

4. In the right pane, double-click be.

5. Close the Sense Editor.

Selecting the FRAME and OCM Codes category

1. On the toolbar, click and select FRAME and OCM Codes.

2. In the left pane, go to 130 Geography, double-click , and select 136 Fauna.

3. On the toolbar, select Include Lower Items.

Tip: Nothing is linked directly to Geography.

4. Select Senses and then select Entries.

Result: Displays all Entries or Senses linked to subitems.

Selecting the Parts Of Speech category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Parts Of Speech.

2. In the left pane, select conjunction.

3. On the toolbar, select Senses.

Result: Displays three Senses of whether.

4. Select Entries.

Result: Displays only the first sense of the Entry whether.

Selecting the Sense Types category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Sense Types.

2. In the left pane, select figurative.

3. On the toolbar, select Senses.

4. On the menu click Help…Current Context (or right-click).

5. In Context Sensitive Help, click What is a figurative sense?

6. Close the Help window.

Selecting the Thesaurus category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Thesaurus.

2. In the left pane, select 2.3.2 Parts of the body.

Selecting the Usage Types category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Usage Types.

2. In the left pane, select colloquial.

3. In the right pane, select one.

Selecting the Subentry Types category

1. On the toolbar, click and select Subentry Types.

2. In the left pane, select compound.

3. In the right pane, select flagpole.

4. On the toolbar, click .

5. Close Compare Related Senses.

6. Close the Category Viewer.
