Population  110 in Peru (2000 SIL), decreasing. 20 monolinguals. Population total all countries: 330. Ethnic population: 500 (300 in Peru and 200 in Brazil). Perhaps 50 in the border areas have not been contacted.
Region  Southeast Amazon Basin, scattered in Ucayali and Madre de Dios states on the following rivers: Sepahua, Curiuja, Curanja, Upper Ucayali, Inuya, Mapuya, Purus, Aguaytía, Yuruá, Las Piedras. Also in Brazil.

Dialects  Most similar to Kashinawa [cbs] and Shipibo-Conibo [shp].

Language use  Official language. The group is disintegrating and losing its identity due to intermarriage with others. Home, village. Mainly older adults. Negative language attitude. Also use some Spanish, Yaminahua [yaa], or Sharanahua [mcd].
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 30%. Literacy rate in L2: 50%. Dictionary. Grammar. Bible portions: 1963–1997.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  SOV. Hunters; fishermen; swidden agriculturalists; lumber workers; oil company workers; maids in cities, on Piedres River only, harvesting and processing Brazil nuts. Christian, traditional religion.
