Baiso

A language of Ethiopia

Population  1,010 (1995 SIL). Ethnic population: 3,260 (1994 M. Brenzinger).
Region  Halfway between Soddo and Arba Minch, Merab Abaya area, Alge village (390); Gidicho Island, Baiso and Shigima villages (200); Welege Island on Lake Abaya (420), and west shore.
Language map  Southwestern Ethiopia, reference number 10
Alternate names   Alkali, Bayso
Classification  Afro-Asiatic, Cushitic, East, Western Omo-Tana
Language use  Have resisted extinction for at least 1,000 years (Brenzinger, Heine, and Sommer 1991). Most domains. All ages. Youth have better proficiency in Gamo [gmo] or Wolaytta [wal].
Language development  Positive toward the idea of Baiso literature.
Comments  Now the minority in all their locations. SOV. Fishermen; agriculturalists; weavers; hippo hunters.
