Population  9,030. Ethnic population: 6,000 (Krauss 1995).
Region  Northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, southeastern Northwest Territories (Snowdrift and Fort Resolution), Fort Smith, Fort Chipewyan, Wolliston Post, Buffalo Narrows, Brochet, and Reindeer Lake some communities.

Dialects  Yellowknife.
Classification  Na-Dene, Nuclear Na-Dene, Athapaskan-Eyak, Athapaskan, Canadian, Hare-Chipewyan, Chipewyan
Language use  Very few readers of Dëne. In La Loche some children still learn Dëne.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 1%–5%. Literacy rate in L2: 25%–50%. Dictionary. Grammar. NT: 1881.
Writing system  Latin script. Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics script, no longer in use.
Comments  “Chipewyan” was an enemy’s term for them. Prefer ‘Dene’; it means ‘the people’ in several Athapaskan languages.
