Population  12,000 (2000 SIL). 6,000 monolinguals (1990 census).
Region  Southwest Oaxaca, Juquila District, Panixtlahuaca, San Juan Quiahije, Yaitepec towns; Ixtapan, Tepenixtelahuaca, Ixpantepec, Amialtepec villages; some rancherías.

Dialects  Panixtlahuaca Chatino, San Juan Quiahije Chatino, Yaitepec Chatino. 71% intelligibility with Yaitepec dialect, 66% with Nopala [cya], 46% with Zacatepec [ctz], 32% with Tataltepec [cta]; Yaitepec dialect has 80% intelligibility with Nopala, 78% with Panixtlahuaca dialect, 20% with Tataltepec.
Classification  Oto-Manguean, Zapotecan, Chatino
Language use  Vigorous. Used by 1 or 2 speakers of other languages. All domains. Oral use in local administration, commerce, religious services, some in primary and secondary education. All ages. Positive attitude. Yaitepec one of most monolingual Chatino towns. 10 also use English, 10 to 20 also use Tataltepec Chatino or Zenzontepec Chatino [czn].
Language development  500 readers, 50 can write. Radio programs. Dictionary. Grammar. NT: 1992.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  Some annual migration to work in coastal coffee growing areas. VSO; short words, affixes, clitics; tonal. Swidden agriculturalists: coffee culture, lumbermen; animal husbandry: cattle. Traditional religion, syncretism, Christian.
