Population  5,000 (1992 SIL).
Region  Kunar River east side, south Chitral District, south of Drosh, Damel valley. 11 villages.
Language map  Northern Pakistan, reference number 12
Alternate names   Damedi, Damel, Damia, Gudoji
Dialects  2 groups: Shintari and Swati, but no significant dialect variation. Lexical similarity: 44% with Gawar-Bati [gwt], Savi [sdg], and Phalura [phl], 33% with Kamviri [xvi], 29% with Kati [bsh].
Classification  Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Northwestern zone, Dardic, Kunar
Language use  Vigorous. Home, community. A few men also use Urdu [urd]; a few women also use Pashto.
Comments  Reportedly came from Afghanistan several hundred years ago. The language has been influenced by Nuristani languages. Pastoralists. Muslim (Sunni).
