Dialects	Wodaabe. Culturally distinct from other Fulfulde varieties.
Classification	Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Atlantic, Northern, Senegambian, Fulani-Wolof, Fula, East Central A member of macrolanguage Fulah [ful] (Senegal).
Language use	National language. The Fulbe (15,000,000) from Senegal to Sudan consider themselves one ethnic group speaking one language, while acknowledging differences in speech. Also use Hausa [hau].
Language development	Taught in primary schools. Radio programs. TV. Bible portions: 2006.
Writing system	Latin script.
Comments	The people are ‘Pullo’ (sing.) or ‘Fulbe’ (pl.), the language ‘Fulfulde’. The English name is ‘Fulani’ and the French ‘Peul’. Many loanwords from Hausa. SVO; prepositions and postpositions; genitives, articles, adjectives, numerals, relatives after noun heads; question word final; 1 prefix, 9 suffixes; word order distinguishes subjects, objects, indirect objects, given and new information, topic and comment; verb affixes mark number, subject (obligatory); class marking with participle obligatory; middle and passive voice; causatives; CV, CVC, CVV, CVVC; nontonal. Muslim, traditional religion.
