Population  A few hundred speakers (Bradley 1997). Ethnic population: 2,254 (2000 WCD).
Region  Upper Irrawaddy gorges, north of Bhamo.
Alternate names   Hpön, Megyaw, Phon, Phön, Phun, Samong
Dialects  North Hpon, South Hpon.
Classification  Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Lolo-Burmese, Burmish, Northern
Language use  Dialects moribund (no children speak them) and may have few remaining speakers. Older adults only.
