Population  13,600. Ethnic population: 28,678.
Region  Khanty-Mansi National Okrug; east past the Mansi [mns], along Ob River.

Alternate names   Hanty, Khant, Khanti, Ostyak, Xanty
Dialects  Northern Khanti, Eastern Khanti, Southern Khanti, Vach (Vasyugan). Intelligibility difficult between geographically distant dialects. 3 dialect groups; Vach ‘archaic’. Dialect used in writing rejected by many speakers.

Language use  Northern Khanty has 9,000 speakers out of 15,000; Eastern has 3,000 out of 5,000; Southern has few or none out of 1,000. Few domains. Used by few children. Positive attitude. Some also use Russian.
