Population  174,000 (2002 census).
Region  West Teso District, south of Lake Kwania.

Dialects  Lexical similarity: 82% with Acholi [ach], 81% with Lango [laj].
Classification  Nilo-Saharan, Eastern Sudanic, Nilotic, Western, Luo, Southern, Kuman
Language use  Home, market, government offices. All ages.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 60%. Literacy rate in L2: 20% in English. Literacy campaign in progress. Used in primary schools, but there are no primers for it. Radio programs.
Comments  Ladefoged, Glick and Criper (1872) and Bender (1988 M. Bender) classify Kumam as Southern Luo; some linguists classify it in the Dinka group. Kumam oral tradition gives a Teso descent. Fishermen (on Lake Kyoga); agriculturalists: finger millet, potatoes, soya beans, sesame, sunflower, sorghum, groundnuts, cassava, cow peas, sweet potatoes, maize, cotton, tomatoes, onions, cabbage. Christian, Muslim.
