Population  29,400 (2004). Ethnic population: 32,746 (2001 census).
Region  Kerala, Wayanad District, Mananthavady, Vythiri tahsils; Kannur, Kozhikode districts.
Alternate names   Kowohans, Kurichchan, Kurichchia, Kurichia, Kurichiyars, Kuruchans
Classification  Dravidian, Southern
Language use  Shifting to Malayalam [mal], more in Kunnam than in Wayanad dialect, but complete shift not expected in the immediate future. The Central Institute of Indian Languages lists this as an endangered language. Further study is being done at Annamalai University. Many prefer Malayalam over their mother tongue and think children should learn Malayalam first. Possible reluctance to use mother tongue outside of village domain. All also use some Malayalam [mal].
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: 68%. Grammar.
Comments  A Scheduled Tribe. Consider themselves higher caste than Brahmin. Agriculturalists. Hindu mixed with traditional religion, Christian.
