Population  25,000. Many have shifted to Bengali [ben] or Oriya [ori] as L1. Ethnic population: 25,500 (2007 survey).
Region  West Bengal, Purulia District, Bundwan, Manbazar, Purulia Muffasil, Puncha, Balrampur, Barabazar, Hura blocks, Bankura District, Raipur, Ranibandh, Indpur blocks, West Medinipur District, Binpur block; Jharkhand, East Singhbhum District, Potka, Dhalbhumgarh, Ghatsila, Musabani, Dumaria, Chakulia blocks; a few in West Singhbhum District.
Dialects  A Western subdialect of Bengali [ben] (Grierson 1903–1928). Lexical similarity: 57%–90% among varieties of Kharia Thar; 53%–63% with Bengali, 51%–67% with Oriya [ori]; 57%–75% with Lodhi [lbm].
Classification  Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Eastern zone, Bengali-Assamese
Language use  Ethnic Hill Kharia in Orissa speak Oriya [ori] as mother tongue. Many in Jharkhand and West Bengal speak Bengali as mother tongue. Home, village, private prayer. Most also use Bengali; some also use Hindi, Oriya, or Santali [sat].
Comments  Spoken by Hill Kharia. The ethnic group is known as Kheria, Erenga, or Pahari. Self-name is Sabar. Hunter-gatherers. Traditional religion.
