Population  17,000 in Cameroon (1991 SIL). Population total all countries: 18,000.
Region  North Province, Mayo-Rey Division, Madingring District [homeland], south border of Bouba Ndjida National Park, south from Madingring, southeast to Lawzigoy (toward Touboro). 25 villages. [displaced: Garoua, Ngong, Ngaoundéré, Touboro (and surrounding villages), Tcholliré]. Also in Chad.

Alternate names   Mbum, Mbum-East
Dialects  Ngumi. Related to Pana [pnz], Nzakambay [nzy], Kuo [xuo], and Mbere [mdt].
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, North, Adamawa-Ubangi, Adamawa, Mbum-Day, Mbum, Eastern Mbum, Karang
Language use  Vigorous. All ages. Positive attitude. Most also use some Fulfulde; some also use some French. Bilingualism declining in French due to decline in education.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 10 to 20%. Literacy rate in L2: 10 to 20%. Literacy rates declined in recent years (2007). Taught in primary schools. Dictionary. Grammar. Bible portions: 1999.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  Christian, traditional religion, a few Muslim.

Region  Logone Oriental region, Monts de Lam Department, Baibokoum Subprefecture, northwest of Baïbokoum along the Cameroon border: Loumbogo, Lawtiko I, Lawtiko II, Sarkaluki villages, and possibly another, as well as 2 Sakpu villages.
