Population  117,000 in Togo (Vanderaa 1991). Population total all countries: 177,000.
Region  Kara region, Kande and Doufelgou prefectures; 50% of the population in Central and Plateau regions, Sotouboua, Ogou, and Haho prefectures; important minority in Lomé. Also in Benin, Ghana.

Alternate names   Lamba, Losso
Dialects  Kande (Kante), Kadjala (Kadjalla), Defale. Similar to Tem [kdh], Kabiye [kbp].

Language use  Also use French, Éwé [ewe], or Kabiye.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 1%–5%. Literacy rate in L2: 20%. NT: 1993.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  ‘Lama’ is their name for the language and people. ‘Lamba’ is the French name. ‘Losso’ refers to people on the Losso Plain, including the Nawdeba (Nawdm). Traditional religion, Muslim, Christian.
