Population  4,130,000 (2002 census).
Region  Southeast, primarily Buganda Province, Lake Victoria northwest shore to Lake Kyoga and Tanzania border.

Alternate names   Luganda
Dialects  Kooki (Olukooki), Sese (Olusese), Vuma (Luvuma), Diopa (Ludiopa). Lexical similarity: 71%–86% with Soga [xog], 68% with Gwere [gwr].
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, J, Nyoro-Ganda (J.10)
Language use  Y, especially in the south. Most widely spoken L2 in Uganda next to English. 1,000,000 L2 speakers (Wiesenfeld 1999). Used in primary schools and churches especially in the south. The Kooki dialect may be extinct. All domains. All ages. Positive attitude.
Language development  Taught in primary schools. Newspapers. Radio programs. TV. Dictionary. Bible: 1896–1968.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  The people are called ‘Baganda’; The Vuma Dialect is moribund. SVO. Agriculturalists: bananas, tobacco, beans, millet, maize, sweet potatoes, peanuts, cassava, cotton; animal husbandry: cattle, goats, poultry; hunters.
