Dialects  San Mateo, San Miguel. 90% intelligibility with San Jerónimo Tecóatl [maa] (most similar, less similar in outlying areas), 60% with Mazatlán, 35% with Jalapa [maj]. Lexical similarity: 94% with San Miguel, 93% with San Mateo, 80% with Soyaltepec, 78% with San Pedro Ixcatlán, 74% with Jalapa de Díaz.

Language use  Vigorous. All domains. Mazatec is needed and used locally, but use Spanish for prestige. Also use Spanish, increasingly in Huautla City.

Comments  Whistle speech, which distinguishes tones of the spoken language, described by G. Cowan (1948, 1952). Short words; tonal. Agriculturalists: maize, coffee. Traditional religion, Christian.
