Region  West central Oaxaca. Santa María Peñoles municipalities, Monteflor, San Mateo Tepantepec, Estetla, and Cholula agencias; Santiago Tlazoyaltepec municipalities; Huitepec municipalities, Huazolotipac agencia. Also in United States.

Dialects  Santa María Peñoles (Peñoles), Santiago Tlazoyaltepec (Tlazoyaltepec), San Mateo Tepantepec (Tepantepec). 14% intelligibility with Chalcatongo. Nuxaá has 30% intelligibility with Peñoles [mil].
