Population	22,200 (2000). 60% monolingual.
Region	East Guerrero, southwest to south of Tlapa in Alacatlatzala, Cahuatache, Tenaztalcingo, Jilotepec, Zacatipa, Tototepec, Cuba Libre, San Isidro Labrador, Quiahuitlatlatzala, Xonacatlán, Tepecocatlán, Cuautipa, Ocuapa, Potoichan towns. Tiny communities in Acapulco, Guerrero; Cuautla, Morelos; Culiacán, Sinaloa, also near San Quintín, Baja California. Some emigration to USA, especially New York.

Dialects	Potoichan (Ocuapa), Atlamajalcingo del Monte, Cahuatache Tototepec, Cuatzoquitengo, Plan de Guadalupe. 65%–85% intelligibility with Metlatónoc [mxv]. Some had 70% intelligibility of Silacayoapan [mks].
Classification	Oto-Manguean, Mixtecan, Mixtec-Cuicatec, Mixtec
Language use	Vigorous. Children of parents who have left the area understand Mixtec, but speak only Spanish. Very few of other languages use this Mixtec language. Home, local shops, for commerce, religion, and among officials in the town hall. All ages. Mixed degree of appreciation for Mixtec among speakers. Pride in Mixtec growing slowly as is interest in Mixtec literacy, but Spanish still largely preferred for reading and writing. Most also use Spanish [spa]. Some also use a Mixtec variety when communicating with Metlatónoc and Xochapa speakers, though average comprehension is only around 70%, more for men, less for women. Less than 5% also use a Tlapanec or Nahuatl variety due to intermarriage.
Language development	Literacy rate in L1: 5%. Literacy rate in L2: 30%. Bilingual schools are increasing though sufficient materials are still lacking and desire for literacy remains somewhat limited. Dialects are orally intelligible, but differences from town to town make it difficult to use the same written materials. Adaptation of materials needed for 3–4 subdialects. Radio programs. Dictionary. Bible portions: 1990–1998.
Writing system	Latin script.
Comments	Not enough land to support everyone, so many leave to find jobs elsewhere. VSO; clitics; tonal. Peasant agriculturalists. Traditional religion, syncretism, Christian.
