Mundurukú

A language of Brazil

Population  10,100 (2002 FUNASA).
Region  Pará, Amazonas, middle and upper Tapajós and middle Madeira rivers. 22 villages.

Alternate names   Caras-Pretas, Monjoroku, Mundurucu, Paiquize, Pari, Weidyenye
Classification  Tupi, Munduruku
Language use  Vigorous. Most women and all children monolingual. Grasslands villages quite monolingual. Those in Jacareacanga also use Portuguese [por]. Men, more than women, in Sai Cinza and those on the Roman Catholic mission on the Cururu occasionally use Portuguese. In many villages along the Cururu many men know trading vocabulary, many women know daily greetings.

Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  Population formerly decimated by outsiders’ diseases and malaria, is presently growing. OV. Traders: Brazil nuts, crude rubber, some gold, pelts. Traditional religion, Christian.
